About Us

Rick and Awilda Wilson, owners of A-R Liberty

My name is Awilda and I am a woodturner.  I am sort of addicted to the look, smell, feel and especially to turning wood.  Like other turners I find myself fascinated by all the different types of wood and their properties.  I’m always looking for a way to get to the finished product with the least amount of frustration.  One way of doing this was to come up with tools, gadgets and gizmos that help me in the creative process.

One such item was the steady rest.  I looked around for a steady rest that would serve my purpose and found them to be either too limited in diameter, too bulky, too heavy, or too expensive.  So, after looking at the ones used in the metalworking industry I decided to design and make my own.  Fortunately, my husband, Rick, does metal working and has a CNC plasma cutter so we designed it on the computer and made our first 3 wheel steady rest.  It worked so well that other members of my woodturning club asked us to make them one to fit their particular lathes.

Later on I got into hollowing and  I found that the 3 wheel design didn’t allow me to use the laser guided hollowing tool due to interference from the top arm of the steady rest.  After working with another woodturner who needed a steady rest for use specifically with a hollowing jig, we came up with the 4 wheeler steady rest design.

We were getting so many orders for these steady rests that we decided to introduce them to all woodturners.  Since we have our own CNC plasma cutter and can do our own welding we can keep our costs down and pass the savings on to our customers.

Check back with us as we add new products, we' ve got several in the prototype stage and are excited about releasing them.
